The Central Otago District Council has identified several trees
that will need to be removed as a result of a recent survey of its parks and
streets.
The survey involved approximately 7000 trees. The Council used a
qualified arborist to carry out a tree risk assessment, and the trees in question were identified because of
significant defects and their proximity to public using
the surrounding areas.
“As trees age and reach the end of their life, or have been
damaged by wind, they can start to pose a safety risk to people and property,
which means they will need to be removed,” CODC Parks and Recreation Manager
Gordon Bailey said.
“Removing trees is not something we like to do, but for these
trees it is necessary.”
The tree removal is scheduled for Thursday 6 October to Saturday 8 October and
will include six flowering plums along the Tarbert Street side of Pioneer Park
and one flowering almond outside GWD Toyota on Brandon Street.
“Several years ago, oak trees were planted
along the Tarbert Street side of Pioneer Park, as it was identified back then
that the plums’ life was limited and would need to be replaced. The replacement
oaks have grown well and removing the plum trees will allow them to reach their
full potential,” Mr Bailey said.
The Brandon Street tree will be replaced with a flowering Cherry
next autumn.
