Council transfer station recycling services expand
Two more recycling services have been introduced at Central Otago District Council (CODC) transfer stations.
Electronic waste recycling will be available at all four Council transfer stations in Alexandra, Cromwell, Ranfurly and Roxburgh from Monday 26 February.
This recycling service will accept all forms of TVs, computers, laptops and computer equipment, printers and photocopiers, household appliances, stereo systems and gaming consoles.
The introduction of this service would help fill the gap in the recycling service for these types of items, CODC Infrastructure Manager Quinton Penniall said.
“We are very pleased to be in position to offer this service, to provide another avenue for diverting items from landfill, and to carry on the spirit of sustainability.”
Recycling costs for the electronic waste will be passed on to the customer. CODC will cover the transportation costs on a trial basis for about the first six months to reduce the costs for customers, with Waste Minimisation Funding from the Ministry for the Environment.
All electronic waste will be sent to E-Cycle for recycling, which is based in Auckland and Christchurch.
Waste (used engine) oil recycling will also be introduced on 26 February to the Alexandra and Cromwell transfer stations.
Waste oil will be accepted in domestic quantities (25 litres) at a cost of $2 per litre. Bunded tanks are available at both locations to store the waste oil, before being collected by Salters Cartage, which is based in Auckland, Fielding, and Christchurch.
All waste oil collected is processed before being used at the Kinleith and Kawerau Mills to power the kilns.
