Dog Registration
Click here to Register a dog for the first time with CODC
Central Otago District Council is required by law to keep a register of all dogs in the district. As a dog owner, you are required to ensure your dog is registered by the time it is three months old.
Once your dog is registered, you are also required to re-register each year (each July). A notice and invoice will be sent to the registered owner with the contact details you provide prior to the registration period as a reminder that the next annual registration is due.
Online dog registrations
Update: 1 May 2024
CODC has a new dog registration system to make registration work more efficiently and to better integrate with our online services. To be able to view your dog or pay dog registration, a login needs to be created. To step you through the process go to: How to register your dog via MY CODC - Animals. See also: Instructions for My Animals - My CODC.
If you want to start using this system now, to view or make changes to your already registered dogs, please email info@codc.govt.nz so we can contact you to provide the required details.
You will be able to register your dog as usual from 1-31 July, and unlike the old system, you will be able to register/pay before 1 July each year as well.
All registrations should be paid by 31 July as a 50% penalty gets automatically applied on 1 August increasing the fee for a pet dog from $55 to $82.50 and a working dog from $12 to $18 (see fees below).
If you get a penalty applied and want this reviewed due to special circumstances, all applications must be in writing. You can apply online for a Penalty Remission OR by downloading this form: Dog Registration Penalty Remission Form (PDF, 79KB).
On 1 September, any outstanding registrations will receive a $300 Infringement for failure to register your dogs. So please pay on time to avoid the fine.
You can pay online - here are the account details - 03-1733-0094176-000 using your name and dogs name as a reference.
If you are having any problems or want more information, please email: dogs@codc.govt.nz
NOTE:
If you haven't paid by 31 July, and you have a mobile phone, and are able to receive notifications from us, you will have received a text which contains a reference number. You need to use this number for payment.
Change of address or ownership
If you change address you need to notify Council to enable us to reunite you and your loved one (if they were to take themselves for a walk), but also to avoid any fines for not updating your details. If you buy or sell a dog you must also notify Council within 14 days. This can be via the online means or by phone.
