Winter is here, and with it comes freezing temperatures.
Not only does ice make road surfaces slippery, but it can also lead to ‘freeze-thaw’ damage, like we are seeing on Hawksburn Road.
So, what is ‘freeze-thaw’?
When ice expands and then contracts ,with additional moisture, it weakens the road structure. This leads to slushy surfaces and sometimes deep ruts on our unsealed roads. Roads in this condition deteriorate quickly and can become unsafe even for 4WD vehicles.
There are very limited maintenance interventions that can be completed to fix this until these roads dry out .Council will put speed restrictions in place and in some cases close roads when public safety is compromised.
Please reduce your speed, drive to the conditions, and follow the guidance of any traffic management and temporary speed restrictions.
If you see any roads showing signs of "freeze-thaw damage", please report it to Council as soon as possible on 03 440 0056.
