Scattering ashes
There are a things to consider if you wish to scatter the ashes of your loved one.
We strongly discourage scattering ashes in any public place such as reserves, parks and gardens that are used for picnics, events, sports and family activities.
Scattering ashes is a personal and sensitive process that varies across different cultures and belief systems. It is important to consider cultural practices and environmental impact when deciding on a location for scattering ashes.
The other issue is that untreated cremation ashes will cause lasting damage to soil and plant health. Scattering ashes also creates other environmental issues such as salinity, eutrophication and acidity.
If you would like a long-lasting memorial ashes can be interred, but not scattered, at public cemeteries.
Council Cemeteries offer the following option for interment of ashes:
- lawn ash interment areas
- columbarium walls
- interment in family burial plots
