Kamaka Walkway pine tree removal
Update Wednesday 6 November 2024:
Tree removal will begin on the Kamaka Walkway this Monday (11 November 2024).
Having been delayed by adverse weather at the end of October, work will begin on tree trimming from the Gillaly Way end to create access for the machinery, to start the tree removal operation. This includes removal of old failing pines that have been posing a safety risk.
The track will be closed from Monday for approximately three weeks.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused while this essential task is being undertaken.

Tree removal work will be taking place in the Kamaka Walkway in Alexandra from the end of October until early November.
The purpose of this project is to mitigate safety concerns due to the risk posed by older and failing pines trees, environmental issues such as an unwanted wilding pine seed source, along with excessive shading, and also because it was more financially cost effective to deal with these issues sooner rather than later.
Feedback from local interest groups and residents has indicated that people are keen to protect the native plantings that have been established and have identified a safety issue because of the ageing pines.
The Council acknowledges the work carried out by the Keep Alexandra Clyde Beautiful group on the walkway and would be taking care not to cause any undue damage to established areas.
This decision has been through the 2024-25 Annual Plan consultation process which was approved by the Vincent Community Board.
The mulch will be left and spread on site which will eventually provide good replanting conditions for more desirable species in the future.
People in the immediate vicinity of the walkway have been informed.
