Work is underway on Foodstuffs’ development that will expand the New World Cromwell site.
In 2021, Foodstuffs, which owns the New World supermarket on Murray Terrace in Cromwell, purchased part of the adjacent Waenga Drive Greenway Reserve from the Central Otago District Council to expand the supermarket site.
The section of land has now been subdivided off the remaining reserve in this greenway, and Foodstuffs has begun developing the remaining reserve area by removing the residents’ fencing and some small trees to make way for new acoustic fencing.
Part of Waenga Drive will be temporarily closed to allow services to be relocated, for landscaping to be carried out within the reserve, including installation of a pedestrian crossing and the New World car park expansion.
The Council notified the temporary road closure in The News/Noticeboard (10 October) and on the Council website under Temporary Road Closures, that Waenga Drive, Cromwell would be closed between Cairnmuir Crescent up to Murray Terrace, Monday 14 October - Monday 4 November 2024, for the purpose of installing new manholes onto existing infrastructure and for the construction of a new pedestrian crossing.
Residents have access to and from properties and there will be detour routes available via Barry Avenue, Cairnmuir Crescent, Jolly Road and Murray Terrace.
