ROXBURGH ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE SITE TO BE CLEARED
ROXBURGH ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE UPDATE – Friday 14 February 2025 - 2pm
The Central Otago District Council was advised today (Friday 14 February 2025) that the façade of the Roxburgh Entertainment Centre will be demolished.
While an engineering assessment has shown that the building’s façade, which is still standing after the devastating fire last week (Thursday 7 February 2025) could possibly be retained, in practical terms the work, required to make the façade safe would drain a significant portion of the insurance funds, and cause ongoing major disruption to the community and immediate neighbours.
Council acknowledged that any remediation costs would significantly take away from the rebuild, and because of the many unknowns about state of the façade and the substructure, the decision was made to clear the site completely.
Other costs such as roading as a result of diverting traffic from State Highway 8, especially heavy traffic, was also a factor in the decision.
Councillors discussed what the loss of the town hall and entertainment centre meant for the Teviot Valley community. Councillors noted the Millers Flat Hall is on the list for divestment in the upcoming Long-term Plan and would like the loss of the Roxburgh meeting place to be strongly considered when final options are presented after the consultation closes.
The Council asks people to respect the cordon for their own safety.
