In a week where for the first time, women outnumber men in New Zealand's parliament at 60 women and 59 men, the Central Otago District Council has achieved a similar gender split with the swearing in of the new council on Wednesday (26 October).
The next three-year term of Local Government began in Alexandra with each councillor making their declaration of office at the inaugural meeting in the Council chambers.
This included new councillors Sally Feinerman (Teviot Valley Ward) and Sarah Browne (Cromwell Ward) and returning councillors Tamah Alley, Tracy Paterson, Lynley Claridge, Martin McPherson and Ian Cooney from the Vincent Ward, Cheryl Laws, Neil Gillespie (deputy mayor), and Nigel McKinlay from the Cromwell Ward, and Stuart Duncan from the Maniototo Ward. Mayor Tim Cadogan was re-elected unopposed and was sworn in by CODC Chief Executive Sanchia Jacobs.
The next meeting has been tentatively set for Wednesday 9 November.
The inaugural community board meetings for Vincent, Maniototo, Teviot Valley and Cromwell will be held next week.
