Plan Change proposes to protect night sky

Submissions are invited for the Central Otago District Council’s proposed amendment to its district plan that would introduce protection for the night sky.

The Council has publicly notified Plan Change 22 (Light), to include a new section in the plan that supports the protection, maintenance and enhancement of the night sky from the adverse effects of artificial lighting. The proposed new section 20 will apply to mapped areas identified in the District Plan as being a dark sky precinct.

Plan Change 22 also proposes the first dark sky precinct in Naseby.
