Omakau and Ophir reserves plan going before Council
Amendments to the Omakau and Ophir Reserve Management Plan 2023 following public consultation, have been accepted by the Vincent Community Board (VCB) with the final plan to be presented to Council for adoption.
At the VCB meeting at Alexandra on Tuesday (17 October 2023), the Board received a report about the recent community consultation concerning four key reserves in the Omakau and Ophir area, in regard to their future management.
The draft reserve management plan included the Omakau Recreation Reserve, the Wilson Street Reserve in Omakau, the Ophir Recreation Reserve and the Ophir Ice Rink Reserve.
Thirty-nine submissions were received from the formal submission process.
The reserve management plan allows for the Omakau Community Hub, with a project update given at the meeting by Central Otago District Council Parks Officer Maria Burnett.
Following suggestions from a community drop-in held during August, one of the amendments to the plan allows for a walking track around the Omakau Recreation Reserve, should the community wish to pursue this, and appropriate funding could be secured in the future.
The Ophir Ice Rink Reserve, not used since the early 1990s, was also discussed and its probable future use, as a result of warming temperatures. Council’s parks and recreation team advised that the reserve status could be uplifted, and the land disposed of in the future.
