Improvements to the long-term resilience of the district’s water services infrastructure will be made during 2024.
The Central Otago District Council is moving ahead with contracts for two major projects awarded this week, for Cromwell and Ranfurly.
The Cromwell Rising Main project contract was awarded to HEB Construction Ltd. At just over $5.7million, the goal of this project is to construct a dedicated rising main to the existing reservoir that will improve operational efficiency, resilience, and capacity of flow to the reservoir. The project is part of the wider programme of work to upgrade Cromwell’s water supply to enable growth and meet New Zealand Water Quality Assurance Rules. Site establishment is scheduled for late December/early January and works will continue throughout 2024.
The Ranfurly Wastewater Pipe Renewals project contract was awarded to SouthRoads Limited. The project is estimated to cost just under $1.4million which will cover approximately 750 metres of new wastewater piping. Works will initially commence in January and the main scope of work will be in the Ranfurly township. One of the key benefits to this work is to mitigate infiltration from the variable ground water table and stormwater, which negatively impact the effectiveness of the Ranfurly wastewater treatment plant.

Pictured: The recent open day held at Clyde gave the public the opportunity to tour the $16.1 million Lake Dunstan Water Supply treatment plant, one of nine major infrastructure projects completed by the Council in the past year. The upgrade to the water supplies has significantly reduced the lime in Alexandra’s water, and the membrane treatment provides an additional level of treatment.
As part of the Long-term Plan, the Council is in the process of upgrading Cromwell’s water supply to meet drinking water quality standards and to allow for growth in the region.
