Work has begun preparing the Cromwell Memorial Hall site for demolition and construction of the new hall and events centre.
Last week, the community farewelled the old hall in a special blessing and ceremony. At the Cromwell Community Board meeting on Tuesday (7 May), the next steps for the site were outlined by the project team.
Three large blue gums will be removed from Butchers Drive starting next Tuesday (14 May) to enable construction of a new car park. The new car park will be utilised by the Cromwell Town and Country Club and is being completed first to minimise disruption to the club and other users. The northern end of Butcher Drive at the Melmore Terrace intersection will be temporarily closed from 14 May to 15 August 2024 to enable the work. This closure is necessary to facilitate ongoing construction activities for the new car park while also allowing access to the Cromwell Town and Country Club. The blue gums are to be offered to the club and neighbours for firewood.
An indicative landscape plan was shared with the Cromwell Community Board on 7 April which shows the trees to be removed for the demolition and construction of the new memorial hall. There will be 25 trees removed and 26 replacement trees re-established over time.
The replacement trees include three trees to go into a new memorial garden. The existing war memorial will be relocated to the new garden together with the plaque commemorating the WWII 50th anniversary. The design of the garden has been undertaken, in consultation with the Cromwell RSA.
