Wheels Up, a campaign to make the Central Otago community more road-safety savvy, will be getting underway later this month.
This is a new programme of work about upskilling, uplifting, and raising awareness of sharing the road safely for everyone who uses the road network, the tagline being 'Share, care and get there'.
Funded through Waka Kotahi/NZTA, initiated by the Central Otago District Council, and led by CODC road safety advisor Chris “Foggie” Foggin (pictured), Wheels Up has several different spokes for folks, whether they be on a bike, in car or riding a horse, namely:
- Share the Road campaign free workshops – held during the national road safety week. Cycling ambassadors, community cyclists and schools are invited to take part.
- Note: 20-26 May is road safety week, with an event planned in conjunction with Fulton Hogan, which has made a truck available, to be parked at the CODC Fulton Hogan bike park on Boundary Road in Molyneux Park, Alexandra. The workshop is designed to give people insights into how to be safe around heavy vehicles, particularly the more vulnerable road users such as cyclists, walkers or horse riders.
- Schools Bike Ambassadors course – held 11-12 June and aimed at developing more bike use in schools.
- Community Bike Ambassadors – next cab off the rank, with a modular development programme being delivered to selected members of our community. (Contact details for more information below.)
- Rolling in the future – with more and varied programmes to come.
The creation of Wheels Up has coincided with Mr Foggin recently joining the Council. He is well-known in the district for his bike passion, and his advocacy of young people for education in road safety.
“It’s been my absolute pleasure to develop this programme. We haven’t had the National NZTA Bike-ready programme at Council, and we needed to integrate this into a plan for road safety that meets a national standard. With an allocation of funding and resources, this is the right time to do it.”
