The next stage of the $6.4 million upgrade to Cromwell township’s water supply will get underway in early June.
This involves installing a 630mm diameter water pipe for the Cromwell Rising Main project between the bore field adjacent to Lake Dunstan near Alpha Street and the new water treatment plant at the Cromwell reservoir site.
The work will take place between 4 June and 12 July, with pipe installation along State Highway 8b (SH8b) towards the Murray Terrace carpark, starting at the roundabout with State Highway 6 (SH6).
The rising main project is the first stage of a significant programme of work being carried out by the Central Otago District Council to provide a fully compliant water supply for Cromwell, to increase capacity and meet the needs of the rapidly growing population. Once finished, this will complete 40% of the water upgrade programme. The second stage of the programme will consist of constructing a new Cromwell treatment plant at the reservoir site), and an upgrade of the bores.
Traffic management will be in place during the pipe installation. The east-bound lane on SH8b will be closed. During this time, traffic to Cromwell town from SH6 will be detoured along Shortcut Road from 4 June to 12 July. People are asked to take care and follow the signage. HEB Construction Ltd is carrying out the work - see map showing the location of works and the detour.
The project is expected to be completed by Spring 2024.
