The Naseby Cemetery is nearly full and is to be expanded.
At the moment, there are only six ashes plots and nine burial plots available. Having reached close to capacity, the 1860s cemetery will need new areas to be developed to cater for future burials.
A report went to the Maniototo Community Board on 15 February 2024 with a proposed plan for the expansion and was approved.
The Central Otago District Council plans to remove over-mature pine trees from the unused sections of the cemetery to the right of Cemetery Road, upon entering the developed part.
In addition, the remaining shelter trees around the cemetery itself will be removed, as some are starting to fall in strong winds. There are a number of heritage-recognised items within the undeveloped cemetery land and Council has been granted a Heritage Authority from Heritage NZ to undertake the tree removal to ensure these items are protected.
Some ornamental conifer trees will remain. Replanting will take place as part of the cemetery development over the next few years.
This work is likely to be undertaken starting 11 November weather depending. Operations will cease during any funeral service.
