New grass verge mowing policy actioned
A grass verge policy adopted by Council in December has come into effect regarding verges in Roxburgh.
Until last year, the town was in a unique situation in that the Central Otago District Council (CODC) had been mowing verges in Roxburgh for a number of years.
As a result of the historic inconsistency of service, the Council was asked to develop a district-wide grass verge policy, which became effective on 31 January, and was discussed at the Teviot Valley Community Board meeting on 5 February 2025.
“The new policy makes it the responsibility of property owners to maintain the grass verges outside their properties which is in line with the rest of the district,” CODC Parks and Recreation Manager Gordon Bailey said.
Residents are encouraged to mow these areas to help keep the community looking tidy and well-maintained.
Council recently noted that the verge on the corner of Smith and Scotland streets in Roxburgh has not been maintained by the adjacent property owner. This area contains several Council and utility infrastructure assets, making its upkeep more challenging. To be consistent with the new policy the community board declined a request to continue mowing the grass verge in question.
However, property owners in Roxburgh and Lake Roxburgh Village who are unable to maintain their verges due to illness, age, or other restrictions can apply for assistance from the Council. This transitional support is part of the new policy (available HERE), which will be reviewed in 2027.
The community board thanked the community for their understanding and cooperation during this transition.
