The Roxburgh
Entertainment Centre has been destroyed by a fire which broke out late
yesterday morning (Thursday 6 February 2025).
The
Central Otago District Council-owned building’s historic façade is still
standing; however, its status is unknown and is being treated with a high level
of danger in regard to safety, with engineers to do a full assessment on
Monday.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) took
over the site yesterday and it is now back in Council control today (Friday).
There are plans to inspect the site by drone.
A fire investigation is
underway. The fire destroyed much of the physical evidence therefore
eye-witness accounts will be key. The cause remains unknown.
Public
safety remains a top priority, and fences are in place. The public is advised to
stay well away from the site.
The
building was not heritage listed; nevertheless, it held a special place in the
community’s heart, with extensive community-led projects undertaken to upgrade
and preserve it, Central Otago Mayor Tamah Alley said.
"This
is a devastating loss for our Roxburgh community, who have poured their hearts
and soul into this building over multiple generations.
We
are very appreciative of Fire and Emergency NZ for their efforts, and for the
support of the community particularly in conserving water at short notice to
provide as much water as possible for firefighting."
