Clyde Heritage Precinct Works
October 2024
Work update - 23 October 2024
Works are progressing well and are mostly limited to the soak pit and drainage work at the Lodge Lane–Sunderland Street intersection. This weekend (Labour Weekend) we will be removing the traffic lights and returning to two lanes. The remaining street light replacements will be completed under the less disruptive manned stop/go set up beginning the week of the 4th of November.
You may notice new street furniture has begun to be installed. There will be some more to go in once the final cordons are removed.
Thank you to those who have filled out the survey. It will be closing at the end of October so there is still time to have your say if you haven’t done so yet. See: Lodge Lane in Clyde | Let’s Talk Central Otago (codc.govt.nz)
Expected work timeline
Returning to two lanes this weekend. Remaining work to be completed within isolated sites through to the end of November.
Hard copies of this update will be delivered to Four-Square in Clyde.
Work update
The texture crossings on the Olivers side are well underway and should be completed by the end of the month. Works on the last tie-in piece from Sunderland Street to Lodge Lane are also underway along with installation of the bollard sockets. A new soakpit will be installed under the footpath here to drain the stormwater flow from the Masonic Lodge mud tank (sump/silt filter) and any overflow on from the adjacent soakpit.
Once the area is clean and clear both lanes will be reopened to traffic. Any remaining work such as street lamp installations will be conducted in isolation within their own small cordons.
Street furniture
I have started arranging meetups with affected parties to decide furniture locations. If you have an affected property or business on Sunderland Street and haven’t yet heard from me, then please flick me a message and suggest a time that suits to meet and discuss options.

This is live. If you haven’t yet had your say, please do. Also please pass the message on to other Clyde residents. Survey closes at the end October.
Expected work timeline
Remains unchanged but if we can finish earlier, we will. By Friday the 29th of November (at the latest) all remaining cordons will be removed.
Hard copies of this update will be delivered to the Four-Square in Clyde.
September 2024
Work update - 24 September 2024
The river side lane of Sunderland Street is nearly finished. We are just waiting till Friday for the concrete in the textured crossing to cure. Both lanes will be open over the Blossom Festival weekend. Next week the cordons will go up in the lane on the Oliver's side so that the second half of the textured crossings can be completed.
New bollards. You will see the new heritage style bollards have started going in. They do not match the old ones. The old ones have not been available for several years. As the old ones need replacing in future the new style will be put in their place. I hope you like them. Once we get some chains up, a few tables and chairs out, and a few planter boxes around the place I think it will look good.
Shortly we will start choosing where to put the new street furniture, seats, bike stands and rubbish bins, and installing heritage style street lights. If you have an affected street front business expect to hear from me soon. Even if you don’t but have ideas about locations for street furniture, please let me know.
Road surfacing. Due to our underground work, there are several patches and strips of black asphalt in the street now making for a bit of a patchwork of black and grey. This is a temporary thing. To reseal the whole street now would add further delay to finishing so this job has been scheduled to outside of the project. Nevertheless, all the affected length of Sunderland Street will be getting resealed. This will take place next year as part of the road resealing programme. Once resealed the road surface will be a consistent colour and texture.
Expected work timeline. Remains unchanged but if we can finish earlier, we certainly will. By Friday the 29th of November (at the latest) all remaining cordons will be removed.
Lodge Lane. Council requests for feedback on Lodge Lane will be opening later this week.
Hard copies of this update will be delivered to the Four-Square in Clyde.

Work update - 10 September 2024
Sunderland street has had one lane reopened to traffic since the evening of Friday 30 August.
Naylor Street reopened at the same time.
The current Sunderland Street layout will remain for the next two or three weeks while the texture crossings are installed on the closed half and new bollards around the new footpaths. Once work on this side is complete the site will flip around so that the river side of the road will open to traffic and the Oliver’s side will close. The remaining half of the two texture crossings and bollards will be installed at this time.
The final stages will be choosing where to put the new street furniture, seats, bike stands and rubbish bins and installing new Sunderland Street lights. These new streetlights will all be a heritage style to match the current ones.
We will be contacting the various businesses in the coming weeks to get their input on preferred locations for the street furniture in their vicinity. We have flexibility as to where this furniture goes so want to make sure everyone agrees before the pieces are fixed in place.
Expected work timeline. Remains unchanged. On Friday 29 November (or earlier), all remaining cordons will be removed.
Thank you all for your on-going patience as we move into the final stages of this long programme of work. This will beautify Clyde’s town centre, improve water reliability, and make it safer for residents and visitors.
Lodge Lane. Please keep a look out for Council requests for feedback on Lodge Lane which will be coming out soon.
Hard copies of this update will be delivered to Four-Square Clyde.
August 2024
Work update - 27 August
The Sunderland Street water trench has now been resealed (asphalted) in preparation for reopening the lane to traffic at the weekend (1 September 2024). This marks the completion of the large water work. Once the Olivers side has been made safe for traffic it will be reopened. This will be a two-directional single lane with traffic lights at each end. The river side of the street will remain closed.
The water team will continue water work for a little longer to install an extension on the new rider main for watering the new garden bed by Hartley Arms, and to install a back flow preventer to Dunstan House. This work will be confined to the closed side of the street (river side).
Next, the road team will start work on the two-texture change crossings. These concrete-and-paver crossings will serve to warn drivers to slow down as they enter the area. The crossing at the Masonic Lodge end will be for driver awareness. The crossing at The Lord Clyde end will double as a crossing point for pedestrians also. Following this, new streetlights, bollards and rubbish bins will be installed.
At the end of this week Naylor Street will also reopen. The Portacom, and any other material still sitting in Naylor Street will be removed in the next few days.
Expected work timelines. These remain unchanged i.e. From September the Sunderland Street worksite will be one lane with traffic lights, and from December all cordons will be removed.
Hard copies of this update will be delivered to Four-Square Clyde.

Work update - 13 August
Sunderland Street work is progressing as planned and is expected to reopen on 1 September 2024. The water team are replacing the faulty water valve outside The Lord Clyde this week. They will also be installing a water line to feed the new garden plot opposite Lodge Lane.
The big water main has passed its pressure test. The fire protection system has been connected to Dunstan House. Now it is time to reseal the areas where the road has been dug up. Resealing will be done this month.
After the road has been resealed, it remains to clean the road and make it safe for traffic before it can be reopened to one lane. This will be a two-directional single lane with traffic lights at each end.
The roading team is working on the new footpaths around Dunstan House and Clutha River Cruises. Installation of the new slot drains, and kerbing is nearing completion. The new footpaths and traffic build outs will start getting concreted next week.
Next, the roading team will start work on the two texture change crossings. These concrete-and-paver-stone crossings will serve to warn drivers to slow down as they enter the area. A crossing at the Masonic Lodge end of the worksite will be for driver awareness. A crossing at The Lord Clyde end will double as driver awareness and as a crossing point for pedestrians.
Expected work timelines. These remain unchanged i.e. From September the Sunderland Street worksite will return to one lane with traffic lights, and from December all cordons will be removed.
July 2024
30 July
If you are driving past the Four Square on Fraser Street, a reminder this is still a Give-Way intersection. There have been reports of near misses caused by vehicles driving blindly straight across Sunderland Street without stopping to give way. We are adding some more signage to try to prevent this, but please be extra vigilant when travelling through this intersection. Also, a reminder please that the Holloway Street speed limit is 30km/h. Vehicles have been seen exceeding this on Holloway making the area more hazardous.
The Sunderland Street work continues as planned. The big 300 mm pipe (bulk water main) is now in the ground and will be undergoing testing this week. This is a big milestone for the project and will increase the reliability of water supply to the affected area for many years. Once testing is complete the next job will be connecting water to the Dunstan House fire protection system. Following this, there is a water valve to be replaced in the road outside The Lord Clyde. Above the ground, slot drains continue to be installed in all the new areas, along with footing for the new schist kerbing. New schist kerbing will start going in this week.
Additional pedestrian access signage has been added to both the cordon fences themselves and now to the NO EXIT – BUSINESSES OPEN AHEAD signs to try to reinforce the message to visitors who are unsure that they can walk the footpaths to the shops.
The expected work timelines remain unchanged i.e., from September the Sunderland Street worksite will return to one lane with traffic lights, and from December all cordons will be removed.
16 July
Extra signs to help to public navigate the roadworks better are being installed on the fence cordons showing arrows and pedestrians walking. These were used on Holloway Street last year and should help to improve travellers’ perception about footpath access to shops. Some signage at the ‘No Exit but Businesses Open’ locations will also be added.
New permanent larger No-Exit signs have also been installed at the entrance to (upper) Miners Lane.
Sunderland Water works. The two isolation points (big shut off valves) on the new 300mm water main have been completed. The old 300mm main water pipe is currently being exposed for removal. We expect this will be removed by the end of the week. The new 300mm water main will be installed after this.
All water disconnections are being advertised to affected properties ahead of time as is mandatory. We have had some reports of high pressure or air in the plumbing of impacted houses following some works. Please send through any water concerns to water@codc.govt.nz for investigation.
Sunderland Street works. Footpath build outs (widening) continues including installation of matching schist kerbing. New slot drains are being installed everywhere the new/wider footpath is going. This is challenging work due to the minimal fall levels (gradients). Outside The Lord Clyde the new garden plot in the Matua-Sunderland intersection is being fitted with root guards and will receive plants next week. Outside Dunstan House, the contractors are working with ElectroNet to move the light pole and power cabling so that this lamp post can be relocated onto the new wider footpath.
Lodge Lane. The Lodge Lane light that is out has been scheduled for repair. The preferred filters have now been confirmed and are scheduled for installation on all the Lodge Lanes lights. Final consultation on permanent pedestrianisation will be commencing soon. Please engage with this consultation process if you have a view on the lanes future function. A decision will be made after this consultation.
Expected work timelines. These remain unchanged i.e. From September the Sunderland Street worksite will return to one lane with traffic lights, and from December all cordons will be removed.
3 July
Sunderland Street work continues. The footpath build outs, kerbing and drainage are progressing on both sides. The new rider main water pipe has been installed, and the large (300mm) main water pipe will be going into the ground next. Expected timelines remain unchanged. From September the worksite will return to one lane with traffic lights, and from December all cordons will be removed.
Newly ordered signs for the state highway detour and for (upper) Miners Lane have not yet arrived. However, Google have now updated (upper) Miners Lane on their map. Route planning on Google Maps has been tested, and the lane is no longer recommended as a through road.
Different filters are currently installed as a trial on the Lodge Lane lights. Once a preferred filter has been chosen this will be installed on all the Lodge Lanes lights to bring the brightness levels down uniformly.
